How to verify that your virus scanning software is working

Lifehacker (one of my favorite sites) has created shows you a simple way of testing your anti-virus software.

They created use a harmless file that should be detected by your virus-scanning software. And they’ve provided simple instructions on how to use it to test whether your anti-virus software can detect virus-infected files via email and even in a zip file.

They’ve even recommended a free, updatable, virus-scanning software package called Clamwin.

The article is a must-read.

actually lifehacker created no such thing - they simply wrote about an existing way to test if your anti-virus product is working… the eicar standard anti-virus test file is quite old and was created by people working on behalf of the european institute for computer anti-virus research…

You are correct! I have amended the original post to reflect that.

    Thanks for pointing it out.
